July 2006

3 Our three hens are very "together" at the moment, hardly leaving each other's sides.
4 Tat may no longer be broody, but she's obviously having a hormonal time as she's now moulting.
5 Totally un-amused when chickens woke me up at 4:30 this morning making an awful lot of noise.  I thought there must be a fox or cat or something outside of the run.  The noise went on for so long that I got out of bed to look.  Guess what?  Nothing, zilch, zip!  Just three hens on the top perch trying to be cockerels!
6 I was hoping for an egg from Aggie or Tat by now, but no luck yet.
7 Tat's feathersPoor Tat, look at all the feathers.....

Crow in chicken runCaught Crow sitting in the run with the chickens !?!

Has he finally lost it?

9 Noon - Aggie standing in the nest, but will she lay?  Of course she will!
10 Well, Tat was in the nest early this morning with Titfer, so I thought she might lay today, but I was wrong.  Three eggs tomorrow maybe?
11 Wrong again - only an egg from Aggie today.
12 2 eggs, one large, one small.  Tat has been in the nest with Titfer but I guess until we get two big eggs, Titfer will continue to get the credit.
13 Hurrah!  After 49 eggless days, Tat has laid.  I thought I might not be able to tell but her egg is slightly smaller and paler than Titfer's, although bigger and more coloured than Aggie's.  But they are not friends this morning.  Usually they all come for corn when they are let out of the run, but Aggie went to one corner of the garden, Tat went on the back lawn and only Titfer (the greedy one - she's always first to the treat tray) came for corn.
Unlucky for some?  Not for us - an egg trio!
14 How perverse - only Tat laid today.
15 Wish I'd had my camera to hand to capture Titfer hopping around the lawn, in pursuit of a butterfly.  She did quite a little dance.
17 TitferMoorhen chickTook a nice pic of Titfer and talking of chicks, we've got three moorhen babies nesting and swimming in our pond and falling over around the garden.
18 Well, 3 eggs today, but what a song & dance!  Tat was in the nest and Aggie wanted to be there alone so she squawked & squawked until Tat vacated.  But, when you've got to lay, you've got to lay, so Tat was back fairly quickly and Aggie vacated.  She then stood at the nest entrance waiting - with a bit of imagination, you could almost she her tapping her foot with impatience.  Tat laid, then Aggie, then Titfer was in & out and in & out of the nest, until she eventually laid too!  It's now 3pm and scorching hot and they're all trying to stay cool under some shady bushes.
19 Scores so far this month:  Aggie 9, Titfer 13, Tat 6
Crow found one of the moorhen chicks on our patio and put it back in the garden.  Later, I found it sinking in the pond, having got caught there in a thunder storm.  I rescued it and again we put it in the garden where we thought "mum" would find it, but it's very weak and I think it may die tonight.  "Mum" hadn't come by nightfall.
20 Moorhen chick RIP.  Poor little thing.

Aggie 200706Aggie's still as handsome as ever.....
22 Locked the chickens away early today as they were just being constantly naughty and invading the front garden, where poo is not allowed!!
23 Doing well with eggs just now, half a dozen in the last two days.
24 Another three eggs.  That's one more than last month with still seven days to go.
26 Crow saw Tat eat a big worm today, then he saw Aggie eat a moth which landed on Titfer's bottom.  That made Titfer jump!
28 Titfer wouldn't go in to the chicken run tonight.  She's usually the hungry one who runs for the treat tray, but Tat seems to have taken over that role at the moment.  In the end, I had to let the other two out again, wait ten minutes and start the process over.  Titfer went hungry as Tat and Aggie had already consumed the contents of the treat tray whilst locked up without her.
29 15:30 Well, I just witnessed the funniest thing!  I heard a strange noise so went to the garden to investigate.  The noise was a sort of strangulated cry from Tat who couldn't make a proper noise because she had a enormous fat five inch worm dangled from her beak.  She was making the noise because Aggie and Titfer were chasing her to try to get the worm.  Tat kept trying to hide, so she could drop the worm and eat it before the others caught up with her.  She did succeed!
I couldn't take a photo as my camera batteries were charging - doh!
31 Titfer laid a monster egg today!
58 eggs, a much better month.  Next month might be full production again, at over 70?
